History Time… Burnside Skatepark \m/
Even though I wasn’t a fan of History in school, or school in general, I think knowing about the history of something that influences you is always good. You can understand better the evolution of the topic in question. Well, the topic is Burnside skatepark, one of the most famous spots in the world. I have yet to ride this place, its been one of my go to spots ever since I saw it on Road Fools 1 and then later on in Tony Hawk’s game.
This place was started in 1990 by a group of skaters who had no where to skate. These guys got together and decided F@£k it lets build something. More and more people got involved and soon enough the place started to get developed. Another bank, a corner pocket, 20ft wide bowl & hip, the place just kept on evolving. It evolved because the skaters had the drive to make shit happen. No one was going to just build them a park out of thin air. As we all know, getting funding from ministries involves a lot of red tape bullshit so they just went ahead and did it on their own. From the get go this place was not sanctioned, they had no permission they just did it. As it evolved the authorities realized the positive impact it had on the community and allowed for the place to stay, as long as they respected the area and it did not attract any public nuisance. This place is truly beautiful, the fact it was made by the skaters for skaters is truly inspirational. Kind of like how we built the track out of nothing with our own hands. I have alot of respect for people who take matters in their own hands and make shit happen. It’s easy to bitch and moan about not having some where to skate / ride, thats pathetic if you ask me. I have built a fair few DIY spots through out the years, and I have plans to build alot more in the near future. I hope this inspires you to do the same. CHECK THE VIDS BELOW, \m/ Peace out
